Natural World, Natural Word: A passionate conversation between Laura Simms, Vi Hilbert (a renowned Salish elder and storyteller) and sculptor/writer Jerry Wennstrom about the healing power of image and word to perpetuate inner and outer balance, between spirit and person, ancestor and memory, and spontaneous language and ancient image. The three will explore the nature of image and the power of listening as a means of transforming the heart and mind without aggression.  Vi Hilbert is an 85-year-old traditionally trained storyteller who has crossed the borders between Native and nonNative ways of knowing. Laura Simms, a senior student of a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Master, is a storyteller and writer who has worked with traditional stories in contemporary retellings for more than 30 years. Jerry Wennstrom, featured in the new Parabola video titled In the Hands of Alchemy, has explored a formless creative/spiritual path which led him to renounce the world in 1979.

What keeps us alive. Created by writer Ted Rose and storyteller/author Laura Simms with a collaborative team of designers, the new series will combine theme-based personal narrative, with traditional mythic tales, and an open mike session, on a late Wednesday each month for three months.  New York City revealed itself as an urban tribal community capable of simultaneous contemporary and mythic levels of experience following the September 11th events.  We aim at keeping alive the diversity, brilliance and uniqueness of New York's story. MYTH, RITUAL AND TRUE LIFE STORY
Storytelling and storywritingNYU Storytelling Classes
Laura teaches first class of NYU storytelling course with Diana Wolkstein and other guest teachers.
Storytelling is a reciprocal narrative event that is unique among theater arts and literature for its dynamic process of engagement, and capacity to generate deep levels of meaning and enjoyment.  In this participatory class combining study, writing  and storytelling, each student will create an original fairytale while gaining an understanding  of how story has always been akin to traditional ritual, and survives to influence the heart of community and individuals.  We will explore which stories we tell and how they affect our lives in the modern world;  why myth and fairytales  have endured regardless of changes in history and technology; and, the social and political benefits of  telling one's story today.  Our readings will span anthropology, literary criticism, fairytales and traditional texts examining myth as it relates to our lives.

NYU School of Extended Studies:

Fairytales in Our Lives Today with Laura Simms
Starts Wed., April 14.
Fairytales are not only for children nor are they merely psychological maps of life journeys. There is a deeper more provocative level of vitality that opens the door to another way of seeing the world--more direct, raw, and immediate. Each class is devoted to the exploration of a single adult fairytale from a different culture. We study how the story, enacted in the mind of the listener, weaned from text only analysis, reveals something essential about our lives. How these stories are about our contemporary lives and offer unique personal and profound spiritual solutions to dilemmas in our world situation today. The course combines reading, discussion, writing, and storytelling activities. We see videos, hear stories, and explore symbol, image, and sign as the engine of transformation. Of interest to writers, theatre students, educators, healers, and anyone invested in the power of narrative and language to awaken the heart.
Dates: 4/14 - 5/12/2004 (5 classes); Wednesdays 6:20 PM-9:20 PM

Thinking Like a Storyteller workshop

For many years Laura conducted an ongoing workshop in her loft called THINKING LIKE A STORYTELLER. Laura will give the first and second of four day-long workshops that explore how to uncover the inner meaning in a story for performance. Each day is limited to ten people.  Each person is requested to choose a traditional story to work on during the day. There is no prerequisite, beginners and advanced performers are very welcome.  We will work with the structure of the story as a reciprocal event; uncovering levels of meaning as we develop personal styles of performance, and taste the power of presence and compassion. The days will be taped and the CD will be available to all who attend.
You may sign up for one, all four, or any combination of dates. Spring dates TBA. Each workshop will be unique and complete taken independently, but will also be enhanced by the other workshops. Cost: $120 per workshop.

THINKING LIKE A STORYTELLER  in Frederick, Maryland
Laura will give a workshop in Frederick, Maryland that will explore how to uncover the hidden meaning in a story for performance. Each participant is requested to choose a traditional story to work on during the day. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work with Laura and other tellers in an intimate setting. Beginners and advanced performers are very welcome. We will work with the structure of the story as a reciprocal event; uncovering levels of meaning as we develop personal styles of performance, and taste the power of presence and compassion.

Saturday, Dec.17
, 10 am to 5 pm
Thinking Like a Storyteller workshop (first NYC workshop was on October 29)

For many years Laura conducted an ongoing workshop in her loft called THINKING LIKE A STORYTELLER. Laura will give the first and second of four day-long workshops that explore how to uncover the inner meaning in a story for performance. In these workshops, based on her THINKING LIKE A STORYTELLER courses, Laura is going to concentrate on the remarkable way in which fairytales reveal truth and wisdom and provide an unforgettable process of awakening the spirit and heart akin to ritual.  We will focus on how one can uncover a way to tell the tale that is as personal as true story, replete with humor and profundity, and can be recalled easily like skin to bone.

Thinking Like a Storyteller - Seattle

Trinity Church, 8th and James in Seattle, WA
The experience of a story in the dynamics of engagement reveals the most profound meaning beyond analysis.  It is the way in which story heals, nourishes and provokes an awakened heart.  Using a single fairytale, our own associations and sudden poems, we will explore and map the genuine alchemy of narrative that is revealed in the experience of listening.   This workshop will include participatory activities that inform contemporary storytellers, therapists or listeners of another way of knowing how a story heard or told is direct “meaning” that provokes enduring transformation. Each participant is invited to bring one fairytale of their choice.  Please bring a notebook and wear relaxed clothing.
Open to everyone. $70 for Jung Society Members and Seattle Storytellers Guild Members/$80 for non-members.

The days will be taped and the CD will be available to all who attend. (Participants can take additional workshops if they desire. These are scheduled regularly.)

Three Golden Apples, with music by Steve Gorn
Presented by Theater Development Fund
Kingsborough
Community College, PAC Performing Arts Center
2201 Oriental Boulevard, Brooklyn, NY 11235
1 - 2 pm, Presentation for Consumer Eyes, Marketing and Storytelling

Dearest Laura & Steve,
Thank you for your beautiful performance of “The Three Golden Apples” on December 3 for the 450 fifth graders. You both work so wonderfully together and the story with the music was such a gift to these kids---and to us, the grown-ups hanging on your every word & note of music. The kids sat on the edge of their seats with their jaws dropped open the whole time. It’s a fabulous sight!

Thank you for being the best of theatre—the simple art of telling a riveting story and transporting kids to a whole other world and giving them a whole new way to look at the world.

You are both treasures. Thank you.
Love,
Marianna Houston, Education Director

THE STORIES WE TELL:
THE ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR TRANSFORMATION

The narrative we construct about ourselves, each other and our world shape our success or supports repeated obstacles. Knowing how to tell a “good “ story and becoming aware of the power of  presence in image, story and enlivened speech is essential today.  Whether personally or in our business, teaching or healing, what story we tell and how we tell it makes a huge difference.  Laura Simms, world renowned storyteller, author, teacher, and consultant will present a contemplative workshop, penetrating and alive with insight,  that offers practical activities that deepen our understanding of the significance of story as a tool for transformation.  As we develop skills in storytelling.

We will combine deep listening, creative contemplation, story writing and storytelling as we uncover an expanded view
of the role of storytelling. The tools of the storyteller are based in genuine reciprocal communication and inspiring the
life force of our stories.  In this workshop we explore a traditional teaching tale and create a personal story.

Program Tuition: $275 includes 3 meals per day served by the Karme Choling kitchen; accommodations extra. The program begins after dinner on Friday, February 5 (please join us for dinner at 6:30) and ends on Sunday, February 7, at time TBA..

Reconciled in the Book of Secrets (Or How to Find Romania)

A one-woman performance of riveting personal narrative and uncanny traditional stories.  Laura Simms is a master of the word and image. While telling us the history of her childhood in Brooklyn, NY, she reveals the remarkable journey of an artist's coming to terms with history, spirituality, and family after WWII. Directed by A Traveling Jewish Theater director Naomi Newman, RECONCILED breaks new ground with a direct theatre genre of storytelling that engages the audience with the immediacy of a kitchen table conversation.Laura becomes a myriad of characters including a Maori elder, a stubborn father, her Romanian grandmother, and herself: as fantast child, delinquent adolescent, and adult seeker. She tells stories from Africa and Babylon, shifting time and place with a subtle change of voice and the simplest of costume change. Laura Simms is a member of the American Repertory Theatre Company. Special pre-show event Sunday, March 21 at 8:00 pm at the Tiny Theater in Poultney. GMC student Pragatee Dhakal interviews Laura about her life, her humanitarian work and her relationship with Buddhism.

Workshop: The Jewel in the Lotus: Finding the Story that Transforms
Sponsored by Therapeutic Arts Alliance of Manhattan, Facilitated by Laura Simms and Emily Nash, LCAT
We live in a river of unspoken stories, some obvious and some hidden, that can either inspire and liberate us, or hold us hostage to repeated defeating patterns. In this workshop, we will begin with group activities that immediately access presence, reciprocity, insight, and creativity, on which the work of uncovering our "story" can occur. The template for our journey is an Iraqi fairytale called "The Healing Leaves" told by Laura Simms. The day will include a process of calling forth and constructing individual stories that have the potency to transform and render us openhearted and resilient. We will explore how we use our intuition and skill in creating "living and shared" dramas to reveal significant and illuminating reflection, as if finding an underwater stream flowing through these found stories.
Laura Simms, storyteller, author, and activist has devoted her life to discovering and developing the power of living narrative to transform and heal. She has worked worldwide with organizations as varied as Norwegian People's Aid, OvidiuRom, Search for Common Ground, and Mercy Corps, Inc. She has studied with storytellers, epic singers and healers in the Phillipines, Africa, Nepal, Romania and Northwest Coast Salish elders. Her storytelling  performances are legendary combining myth and memoir. Presently, she is working on a book about myth and memory called "How to Find Romania." She teaches worldwide and is part of Catalyst Arts, Inc. Most recently, she performed at the Barbican Theater in London and the Gorge Theater in Northern Vermont. She is a senior teacher of Shambhala Buddhist mediation practice. Her most recent award was the Brimstone Grant for Applied Storytelling 2009.
Emily L. Nash, LCAT, has been a leader in the field of therapeutic theater for twenty-five years, during which time she has developed a unique approach of integrating drama therapy with the principles and practice of modern analytic group psychotherapy. She is currently the Director of Supervision and Training for the ArtReach Foundation, where she works internationally with educators, mental health professionals, and children in war torn countries, and domestically has co-created an integrative therapeutic arts project with returning veterans. She is the Director of Clinical Supervision for the Creative Alternatives of New York. Ms. Nash has presented her work extensively nationally and internationally, and has published her work with traumatized youth. She has a private practice in NYC.
